About Maryland CHI Penn North
Penn North Recovery is an integrated community focused outpatient behavioral health and wellness center in Baltimore, Maryland. They help individuals overcome substance use/misuse, homelessness and crime. They primarily offer acupuncture, outpatient counseling and job readiness training. Their recovery model is wellness focused and incorporates proven therapeutic practices and 12 Step models. The program starts with comprehensive clinical assessment and individual treatment planning. This is followed by individual counseling and group therapy. The goal is to help you identify signs, symptoms and negative behavioral patterns that trigger your substance misuse.
You’re encouraged to develop new problem solving skills, learn how to better manage anger/stress and communicate effectively. These are essential skills that can reinforce your coping and relapse prevention strategies after recovery. You’re also encouraged to attend NA meetings and live up to the principles of the 12 Steps philosophy. This program may integrate acudetox or acupuncture detoxification as part of their holistic practices. This technique uses ear acupuncture to support individuals struggling with substance misuse and mental health conditions. Combining acupuncture with counseling and support groups like AA and NA increases your chances of success in recovery. The facility can offer this technique as a standalone outpatient service. It is affordable, clinically efficient and drug free. The procedure also works well across different cultures.
Penn North’s wellness focused outpatient therapy group and activities are pretty extensive. There are weekly acupuncture/oriental medicine, monthly healing circles and art therapy groups. Smoke cessation and nutrition education/cooking classes are available. There are also sessions on mind-body techniques including yoga, meditation and visualization. Other forms of bodywork like massage and zero balancing are also available. This is in addition to tai chi, qi gong and other martial arts. You don’t have to participate in all these activities. Committing to a few may significantly improve your emotional, psychological and physical wellbeing. This is essential for lasting sobriety.
The facility also provides bimonthly sex education and HIV/STD testing. These comprehensive services are available in both their general and intensive outpatient programs. The latter is relatively structured and involves more intense therapy. You can expect to participate in up to nine hours of group sessions weekly. The general outpatient program may require just 90 minutes of therapy weekly. You can also benefit from their support housing and employment assistance programs. The latter prepares you to reenter the workforce through services like resume development, personalized job coaching and GED/computer literacy classes. The facility offers referrals to outside services. Comments from past clients reflect overwhelmingly positive experiences.
