About Forest County Potawatomi: Health & Wellness Center

Located in the beautiful wilderness setting of Crandon, Wisconsin, is the Forest County Potawatomi Health and Wellness Center. The center is for Native Americans and their families, as well as others living in the local community. Providers use both modern and traditional treatments for substance use and mental health disorders.

Treating Substance Use Through Traditional Values in Forest County

One unique aspect of the substance use treatment program I noticed is the incorporation of traditions and values. The treatment is culturally sensitive and Native American spirituality is integrated with modern treatment modalities for Natives and non-Natives. This includes the understanding that all things have life, importance, and spiritual energy. There is reverence and respect for everything and all things are connected.

Some traditions I thought were cool include smudging for purification, which involves burning specific herbs like sage and sweetgrass. The burning herbs banish negative thoughts and emotions and encourage renewal and peace. This is a spiritual and sacred ceremony. Other traditional ceremonies include talking circles where people share life experiences, storytelling from elders, and sweat lodges for purification.

The substance use treatment program also includes the 12 Step recovery process, educational talks, individual and group therapy, and family participation.

Mental Health Treatment for Tribal Members in Scenic Crandon

The mental health treatment at the center is also culturally sensitive to Native Americans and those in the surrounding community. They treat adults, adolescents, and children. You can get medication management, grief counseling, individual and family therapy, couples counseling, and anger management in addition.

There are many additional supportive services for Forest County Potawatomi Tribal Members and Native Americans within 10 miles of the reservation. These include child care services and services for the safety, welfare, and health of the Tribe’s children.

Community advocates are available around the clock for help with those affected by domestic violence or sexual assault. Tribal members may seek assistance with employment through the economic support department. There is a family resource center and an Indian child welfare center for Tribal members.
