About Captain James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center Kenosha VA Clinic
The Kenosha VA Clinic is an outpatient clinic that provides primary care, mental health disorder, and substance use disorder treatment services. In addition, they have specialty services that include the LGBTQ+ community. The clinic serves Veterans, active duty military personnel, and their families. They’re located in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The clinic accepts Veterans Administration insurance.
Helping Military Personnel with Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders
Behavioral health treatment in Kenosha through the VA includes substance use and addiction treatment. Treatment teams use evidence based therapies to treat substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. Therapies include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), contingency management (CM), motivational interviewing (MI), and motivational enhancement therapy (MET).
I think it’s great that they also have medication assisted treatment (MAT). They offer medications to help you quit opioids, tobacco, and alcohol.
Addressing Intimate Partner Violence
Intimate partner violence is often difficult to address, so I think it’s great to see the VA working to end domestic violence and abuse. Programs include the Recovering From Intimate Partner Violence through Strengths and Empowerment (RISE), and the Strength at Home (SAH) program.
RISE uses trauma informed therapy to help clients heal from physical aggression, threats, unwanted sexual behavior, and more from an intimate partner. The SAH program is 12 weeks and works to improve relationships and decrease abusive behaviors. Clients learn about conflict resolution and how to deescalate situations before they turn violent.
LGBTQ+ Veteran Care in Kenosha
Another thing I like about the Kenosha VA Clinic is the fair treatment of military members in the LGBTQ+ community. Traditionally, the community hasn’t been embraced by the military, but that’s changing. It’s good to know that the unique needs of the LGBTQ+ community members are now being met within the VA healthcare system. From gender affirming therapies to hormone therapy to mental health and wellness, individuals can now get the treatment they need to live to their full potential.
There’s a comprehensive array of services offered at the clinic in Kenosha. For any services not available, the treatment team will refer you to a provider within the community. If you’re offsite, you can also exercise and clear your mind between sessions at greenspaces like Red Arrow Park nearby.
