About York County Shelter Programs
York County Shelter Programs (YCSP) is a treatment center located in Alfred, Maine. They provide services for adults who are struggling with substance use disorders (SUD). They offer residential treatment, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), art therapy, 12-step programming, individual counseling and a job skills training program.
Their residential treatment can last up to six months and takes place at a facility called the Layman Way Recovery Center. It has 24 beds. While it started out as a place specifically for people in the criminal justice system, it’s now open to all local residents.
The week-to-week schedule during inpatient treatment can encourage you to develop a healthy routine and create more structure in your life. Twelve-step programming will be part of your treatment plan. This helps you gain a more in-depth understanding of the recovery support tools you can utilize moving forward.
Residential care also includes MAT. Their MAT program combines the use of FDA-approved medications with counseling or psychotherapy services. The medications that are traditionally used are Suboxone, Vivitrol, methadone, and buprenorphine. They provide relief from the impacts of chemical dependency and help improve brain function.
Something I like about this facility is its unique job skills training program. This service helps connect you to career opportunities that you might not know about, especially if you are struggling with homelessness or seeking steady income to improve your quality of life. They offer job training programs for the maintenance and food service industries. Their maintenance job training program covers skills like remodeling, carpentry and home repairs. Their food services job training program will include food prep for the residents.
No matter where you’re at in your recovery journey, Alfred is a great city to live in while you heal. It offers many historical sites to enjoy, most of which are located in the Alfred Historic District. It’s also surrounded by lots of wide-open space to help you heal through nature therapy. When you leave this program, a hike or snowmobile adventure in the Massabesic Experimental Forest might be just what the doctor ordered.
