West Valley Behavioral Health

West Valley Behavioral Health, part of West Valley Medical Center, is located in Caldwell, Idaho, about 30 minutes from central Boise. Here, people with substance use disorder and co-occurring mental illnesses can receive compassionate treatment in one of the state’s top hospitals. The facility offers inpatient and outpatient services, including a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and general outpatient care. They’ve been around since 1975, which to me indicates they’re an important part of the community.

Individualized Dual Diagnosis Care

One of the great things about West Valley Medical Center is that they design individualized treatment plans for every patient. Plus, they treat the whole person, not just their primary illness.

Often, people with substance use disorder also face challenges such as trauma, depression, ADHD or physical ailments. These issues can contribute to one another, creating a vicious cycle. The interdisciplinary team at West Valley Medical Center is equipped to help you tackle all of these problems. In addition to seeing licensed counselors, you’ll also have access to experts such as psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and social workers, all with unique skill sets.

Unique Treatments for Mental Health Challenges

Another thing I like about West Valley Medical Center is that they offer a variety of treatment modalities. So, in addition to standard individual and group talk therapy, you can take part in experiential therapies, such as art and music therapy.

They also offer electroconvulsive therapy. Although there’s a misconception that “shock therapy” is barbaric and painful, nowadays it is actually very safe and performed while patients are under mild anesthesia, so they don’t feel uncomfortable. It can be very helpful for people with conditions like depression or schizophrenia who haven’t had luck with standard treatments such as medications and counseling.
