About Oxford House Gravois
Based in Saint Louis, Missouri, this Oxford House is part of a network made up of self-run, self-sufficient, nonprofit residences for addiction recovery. Presenting a unique format for transitional housing, Oxford House Gravois is a publicly supported facility. Residency is available for 8-15 people per household, and houses are gender separated. This is a men’s only house.
These nondescript houses guarantee a sober and drug-free living space for all involved. Oxford Houses rely on mutual aid from organizations like AA and NA, and residents are expected to participate in these support groups as needed.
The house is democratically run by its residents who elect officers to serve six month terms, similarly to a sorority or fraternity. During their stay, residents in recovery learn responsibility for managing their daily routines, including chores and household expenses. Residents are allowed to stay for as long as they’re sober, and can pay their share of house expenses. While most residents stay just over a year, some choose to stay for several years at a time.
As for admission, individuals need only fill out an application. If they’re shortlisted, members of the house will interview them. If 80% of the house is in agreement, the applicant will be accepted if there’s a vacancy.
Since this is a sober living home rather than an outright treatment center, it’s best as an option for those who have completed intensive treatment and can live fairly independently while attending outpatient care.
This residence is in the middle of suburban Saint Louis. It’s surrounded by other homes, with some parks and recreational areas not too far away. Carondelet Lake and Bellerive Park are several blocks away, with the Mississippi River a bit farther.
