Council Oak located in South Bend, Indianapolis, is part of Oxford House. Across the globe, Oxford House provides low cost, self sufficient housing for people who are committed to living free from addiction. There are over 2,900 Oxford homes in the United States. Council Oak is women's only housing.
Each Oxford House is democratically run by its residents. The houses are furnished, but each resident is responsible for their personal items such as clothing, hygiene products and food. If you are interested in becoming a resident at Council Oak you will first fill out an application online. Then you'll set up an interview with the other current residents of the home. They will vote on admitting new members. Once you've been accepted you get to move in. The structure of Council Oak is very simple. Basically it is like any other residence, with roommates who are committed to keeping the house drug free.
Oxford House is the umbrella organization that provides the network connecting all Oxford houses. Three or more Oxford houses in an area form a chapter. Chapters meet monthly to vote on larger issues, exchange information and seek guidance. Some Oxford houses share the cooking and cleaning responsibilities, while others might divide the labor in different ways.
