For women who cannot afford traditional treatment, free rehabs can feel impossibly out of reach, but a Kentucky horse farm program is changing that.
Stable Recovery, based in Lexington, offers a fully funded, yearlong addiction recovery program at no cost to participants, and it recently expanded to serve women for the first time.
The women’s program launched at Spy Coast Farm, an 800-acre operation in Lexington, giving women in recovery hands-on training working alongside some of the sport horse industry’s top professionals.
Six women enrolled in the first cohort, coming, as program director Katie Silvers described, from broken homes and difficult backgrounds, finding in the farm something like a sisterhood they had never experienced before.
How the Free Rehab Program Works
Stable Recovery is a yearlong, 12-step residential program where participants live, work, and heal on the farm.
Unlike most residential rehab programs that can cost thousands of dollars, it is entirely free for participants, funded by private donors and grants.
Residents do not pay for room and board until they are gainfully employed after completing the program’s initial phase, a 90-day School of Horsemanship where they learn the fundamentals of horse care and farm operations.
Graduates of the school can begin full-time, paid work immediately. Completing the full year earns participants “legacy graduate” status.
The model has produced tangible results: one of the program’s first graduates now works as a division manager overseeing 200 horses at Taylor Made Farm.
Program director Katie Silvers says the 90-day school provides women with opportunity, growth and the ability to feel empowered.
Horses, she notes, can sense fear and read emotions, something she believes women in recovery genuinely need.
Why the Horse Model Works for Low-Cost Treatment
Stable Recovery co-founder and CEO Christian Countzler says the program goes beyond sobriety. The goal is teaching participants how to stay sober so they don’t cycle back through facilities or incarceration.
It’s is why the program runs a full year, because healing wounds built over a lifetime of addiction takes time.
Addiction can strip people of purpose, dignity and future prospects. Stable Recovery’s model is built on the belief that meaningful work, caring for animals, learning a skilled trade, rebuilds self-worth in ways that short-term clinical programs often cannot.
The program also addresses a real workforce challenge in Kentucky: a growing labor shortage in the thoroughbred horse industry.
Stable Recovery was designed as both workforce development and addiction recovery.
Who Qualifies for This Free Rehab Program
