Free E-Bikes Connect Maryland Residents to Treatment

Willingness isn’t always the barrier between a person and recovery. Sometimes it’s as simple as having a ride. Recover E-Bikes, a Glen Burnie nonprofit founded by Chris and Alex Kauffmann, provides people recovering from addiction with free electric bicycles.

The goal is for participants to be able to reach work, treatment, recovery meetings and everyday appointments across Anne Arundel County.

How the Program Works

The nonprofit has 20 e-bikes on the road and more than 340 applications. Bikes stay with the organization and pass to another participant when one rider no longer needs one.

The Kauffmanns stated, “We give them a structure. We give them an opportunity for them to achieve their goals.”

Chris and Alex are in recovery themselves. They built the program around the transportation gaps they personally navigated.

Why Transportation Matters

Falling out of care is often due to missing appointments. Reliable transportation means a person can stay in treatment as well as keep a job without owning a car. It quietly increases the odds that treatment will work.

Finding Affordable Treatment

Anyone in need of treatment in Maryland should search for local rehab centers across program types, including facilities that accept state funding or Medicaid.
