About Home Intervention
Washington County Mental Health Services (WCMHS) supports people living in Washington County, Vermont, who need help with substance use disorders and other mental health challenges. Their Home Intervention program is an alternative to hospitalization during mental health crises that are often caused by substance abuse. Based in Barre, Vermont, this program is part of their Intensive Care Services and provides a safe and supportive place for people to stabilize and begin to feel grounded again.
A Long History in Central Vermont
WCMHS has been part of the community here since 1967. It’s a nonprofit and one of Vermont’s designated mental health agencies, which means they’re qualified to provide care for children, adults, and families who need help with not only addiction treatment, but other complex mental health issues.
What impresses me is their mission to be a place where everyone is welcome. I think you’ll find an inclusive, respectful environment where you can feel safe and supported.
Get Help Without Going to a Hospital
When you’re in crisis, it’s not uncommon for the people who care about you to suggest going to the hospital. They mean well, but maybe you don’t want or need a hospital stay. That’s where Home Intervention might be a good short term solution.
When you enter their program, the focus is on helping you through what’s happening right now. They work with you to understand what’s going on, offer support, and make sure you feel safe. They’ll help lower the stress that brought you in and talk through what might help in the days ahead.
While many clients come to the program through a home visit from their mobile or onsite crisis team, you or a loved one can also call their 24/7 crisis number and speak to someone from their emergency screening team.
I’ve seen how a service like Washington County Mental Health Services' Home Intervention program can offer support when things feel unmanageable. Former clients like that it’s structured, but the atmosphere feels more relaxed than a traditional hospital. Sometimes, that kind of space makes it easier to breathe and start sorting things out.
