About MUSC Health Institute of Psychiatry
MUSC Health Institute of Psychiatry in Charleston, South Carolina provides therapeutic support for individuals affected by mental conditions and substance misuse or both. Various addiction treatment and recovery options are available for adults through their Center for Drug and Alcohol Programs (CDAP). This includes intensive outpatient rehabilitation, outpatient recovery and a buprenorphine maintenance program.
These treatment options will help you overcome substance misuse and co-occurring disorders. Each program begins with a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment.
Their intensive outpatient rehabilitation is a flexible program that engages you in activities that support lasting recovery. It incorporates recovery skills, addiction education classes and individual and group therapy. This therapy uses clinically proven methods like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI) and 12-step facilitation.
This model encourages positive thinking and feelings that help motivate you to make good changes in your behavior. The focus is on creating a strong support network for recovery and developing interpersonal skills. Some of this includes effective communication, problem-solving and managing anger and stress. These enable you to handle triggers better, avoid relapse and maintain sobriety.
You can expect about nine weekly therapy sessions divided into three sessions three days a week. This includes Wednesday evening virtual relapse prevention groups where you’ll participate alongside program alumni as part of their thriving recovery support community. Random alcohol and drug testing is conducted during therapy to ensure you’re on track. The program also includes psychiatric care like meds management to support folks struggling with co-occurring conditions.
You’ll work with a clinician to craft an aftercare plan for sustained recovery. This normally involves stepping down to their outpatient recovery program. This program involves a less intensive schedule of further individual therapy to reinforce your specific treatment goals. They might provide this therapy virtually to make it more comfortable for you. Psychiatric care is also available.
Their Buprenorphine maintenance clinic uses buprenorphine alongside group psychotherapy to address opioid dependence. The meds ease withdrawal symptoms and the therapy tackles the psychological aspects of your opioid misuse. This medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is provided by licensed addiction counselors and psychiatrists who collaborate to get the best results.
CDAP also provides confidential addiction evaluations and treatment for medical and legal professionals. MUSC Health does not offer adolescent substance use treatment through CDAP. Such services are available through their Youth Collaborative and Family Tree initiatives. The Youth Collaborative provides clinical services, research opportunities and educational classes to prevent substance use for young adults aged 12 to 25. The program promotes healthy community development.
Family Tree is an outpatient adolescent treatment and recovery initiative that supports children aged 12 to 18 affected by substance misuse and co-occurring disorders. The therapeutic intervention for these kids includes psychoeducation, cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational enhancement.
