About Montgomery County Emergency Service
Montgomery County Emergency Service (MCES) is a nonprofit organization providing mental health crisis intervention to residents in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The facility has been offering care for 50 years, focusing specifically on collaborating with government, health care, community organizations and law enforcement to help people overcome substance use disorders (SUDs) and reintegrate into the community.
Emergency Psychiatric Support
Crisis intervention and harm reduction are core tenets at MCES. This includes providing proper training to local law enforcement and emergency responders to prevent adverse reactions when responding to calls. The facility also serves as a walk-in crisis center and provides acute inpatient psychiatric care.
Providing a Bridge for Dual Diagnosis Care
One factor I found important is that MCES specifically tackles a common disconnect between addiction recovery and managing underlying mental health conditions. Too often, newly sober people are expected to coordinate multiple care appointments not just for addiction treatment but to treat any other mental health concerns. This can be too much for some people to manage, leading to relapse or even involuntary hospitalizations.
MCES is working to address this by offering dual diagnosis care for inpatient admissions. Along with participating in drug or alcohol rehabilitation treatments, patients also receive care for any diagnosed mental health conditions that can contribute to substance abuse. The program involves creating a customized relapse prevention plan for each patient known as “My Action Plan for Relapse Prevention” (MAP).
Inpatient Care and OARS
While MCES does treat other behavioral health conditions beyond substance abuse, I like that the facility specifically addresses the needs of addiction recovery by incorporating counseling as a cornerstone of the process. This includes the Ongoing Abstinence Recovery Schedule (OARS) program which works to help people tackle sobriety in small increments down to the hour if necessary.
