About Aberdeen Area Youth Regional

The Great Plains Youth Regional Treatment Center is a teen substance abuse program for members of federally recognized tribes. They follow a holistic care model that strives to bring each client’s functioning and skills to a place where they can lead healthy lives. They have what they describe as “enhanced care” for dual diagnosis clients.

This is an open entry, open exit program, meaning it doesn’t follow a set time table for completion. All client's needs are met during their stay, including educational, medical, and spiritual. The program also serves as an introduction to the 12 Steps, although there are many different components to treatment as a whole.

Medicaid and selected private insurance providers are accepted.

Family Care Included

A part of this program I find interesting is Family Days, where a client’s family comes to the residence to participate in family specific programs. I like how it gives families an up close look at the recovery process. Still, even more than that, I appreciate how it gives everyone in the family support during recovery. It covers subjects like codependency and family systems.

It also includes Adult Children of Alcoholics, a program that can help adult members of the family address some of their own traumas surrounding drug issues. I think it’s impressive how deeply the family programming goes toward lifting everyone to assist in your own recovery.

Support Groups

Also included are meetings with several support groups, including AA and the 12 Steps. Support groups form a sort of continuing care. Introducing clients to a resource that can support them outside of treatment sessions.

Cultural Support

The education side of treatment keeps clients current with their school work so they won’t fall behind their peers. However, in addition to things like earning credits or a GED, it features cultural education. Activities like art and music expand their experience with and appreciation of American Indian culture.
