About Forward Choices
Forward Choices is a mental health facility located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They treat people of all ages for mood, personality, and trauma-related disorders. They also treat people who struggle with a mental health issue and substance use at the same time, called dual diagnoses.
The office is open from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Friday. They take private insurance and self-pay.
Evaluation in Milwaukee
When you sign up, you’ll have an evaluation the first time you come in to determine the level of care you need and the best type of treatment for you. If you need medically assisted treatment for drug withdrawal, they can refer you to a facility that will help you.
I like that they perform strength-based evaluation. They will look for a person’s abilities and skills rather than focusing on their problems. They will try to build these strengths up in therapy.
What to Expect from Treatment
You’ll have group and individual therapy. Family and couples therapy is available to people who need it. They offer evidence-based methods including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing (MI).
I was happy to learn that they also offer alternative therapies here. There are two therapy dogs on staff. They also offer art and play therapy, which can even include the dogs! A therapist can learn a lot from looking at art a client has created or seeing how they interact with animals. Children will often reveal their feelings and thought processes when they play a game.
The Staff’s Experience
They have a lot of psychotherapists on staff to choose from. Many of them have unusual specialties such as poverty-related trauma and adjustment disorder.
