Treating Acute Care Behavioral Health Disorders in Mukilteo, Washington
The evaluation and treatment facility treats adults 18 and older who are a danger to themselves or others as determined by a designated crisis responder (DCR). The DCR works under the Involuntary Treatment Act (ITA) and legally assesses the client’s current crisis. If the behavioral crisis is such that a client can’t participate in a voluntary safety and stabilization plan, the client is then held involuntarily for up to 120 hours (five days). A court may deem it necessary to hold the client for up to 14 days for more intensive treatment.
All admissions to the Mukilteo facility are involuntary on referral from a DCR. Before a referral is made under the ITA, responders ensure that the hold is the least restrictive means available to stabilize the client.
Approach to Care for Patients on Involuntary Hold in Mukilteo
The team takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating clients. The level of care varies based on the needs, symptoms, and risks of each individual. The environment is highly structured. Treatment includes a psychiatric evaluation and psychotropic medications if appropriate. I like that clients in such a difficult situation receive a lot of individualized attention. The therapies include behavioral support and individual and group counseling.
If families are available and it’s appropriate, clinicians provide family intervention and support. From discharge planning to follow-up appointments, the team works to stabilize clients for a safe return to their community.
