Serving the Black and urban communities in St. Louis, Missouri, Basic Inc. provided culturally sensitive chemical dependency services. They’re temporarily closed now but this facility stood for the Black Alcohol/Drug Service Information Center. What’s special about this facility is that their counselors had lived experience of addiction, meaning they had firsthand experience of what it’s like going through the recovery process.

Counseling used evidence based therapies including motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, Twelve Step facilitation, trauma informed care and culturally specific counseling. This combination of approaches helped build self esteem, changed attitudes toward substance use, and helped clients develop tools and strategies to cope with stress.

Former clients were impressed by the care they’ve received at Basic Inc. They appreciated that many of the counselors were also recovering addicts, so they understood exactly what clients were going through.
