About YSS Youth and Shelter Services Boone
If you're in or near Boone, Iowa, you may already be familiar with YSS Youth and Shelter Services - Boone. They are a provider of support services for youth and adults, with an emphasis on youth services. It's an outpatient setting with mental health and substance use counseling. YYS seeks to educate and empower kids and teens by addressing challenges they face every day. YYS is there to help their transition into adulthood. They also have support services for parents.
Housing and Transitional Living Programs
YSS understands that recovery starts with a stable living environment. For many people who walk through their doors, that's already in place. But they want to extend care to those who have no homes with an array of housing programs.
The Boone location offers rapid rehousing and transitional living programs. In both programs, you'll receive help building independent living skills, including securing employment. The transitional living program lasts 18 months, and during that time you'll work with staff to find permanent housing. With the rapid rehousing program you'll live in your own apartment and receive rent support from YSS for up to a year.
Life Changing Mentors
Their mentor program is separate from counseling, but the impact it can have is just as powerful. This program pairs volunteers with kids for in-school mentoring.
I like these programs because they're so simple but effective. Just having someone to meet with once a week to talk to and have fun with can create positive outcomes for kids who may be struggling. There's also an added element of structure with these recurring meetings.
A mentor can help a child just by spending time listening and interacting with them. By combining this program with counseling or other support services it can help children socialize more and give them another person they can trust.
Telehealth Support
YSS has a telehealth option. I think this is especially useful for teens and families because of the scheduling conflicts that arise from school and extracurricular activities. You may want to consider this option if you need a backup plan when you can't make it to the clinic and don't want to miss your session.
