About Women In Need Kauai
Women in suburban Lihue, Hawaii, with substance use, domestic violence, homelessness or are involved in the justice system can find help at Women in Need (WIN). They have provided addiction treatment, parenting assistance, and post incarceration support since 1996.
Treatment For Mothers and Their Children on Kauai
One thing that makes Women in Need unique is that they allow children to stay with their mothers in the transitional housing units while the women attend outpatient treatment and get support to be independent.
Along with an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that lasts six months, WIN offers an anger management program for 20 weeks, and a course on healthy relationships that runs for 10 weeks, followed by domestic violence survivor support. These classes help the women maintain recovery by teaching them skills in emotional management and helping them avoid dangerous and manipulative relationships that would push them off course.
I also see that they have support for youth, partly in recognition of the fact that addiction, incarceration and abuse affect the whole family. They work with Child Welfare Services and provide crisis intervention and youth services.
Support for the Justice Involved That Starts in Prison
Transitioning out of incarceration and into the community can be overwhelming because you need to find a place to live and some financial support until you find work. WIN helps women leaving prison set up the plans to make the shift confidently.
WIN works with women about to be released to set goals for post-prison life and helps them find housing and set up treatment. I think it’s great that staff from WIN teach re-entry classes at the Women’s Community Correctional Center and work directly with the parole board.
Being able to access transitional housing, outpatient treatment, additional education and supportive housing can help reduce returns to prison and help women create a new path in life. It’s also cool that Līhu'e Public Library and some rec centers are a few blocks away, so you can spend your downtime exercising your mind and body.
