About Villa Santa Maria

Villa Santa Maria in Cedar Crest, New Mexico, was a residential community program that offered treatment to children and families of children who had attachment disorders. Now closed, they had offered counseling and support programs that could address the needs of individuals and families who had a substance use disorder. Cedar Crest is just east of Albuquerque, near several state parks and along Route 40.

No Structured Substance Use Treatment

They could not accept children who required detox. The core treatment philosophy was based on supporting families with therapeutic interventions and role modeling that helped emphasize trust in relationships, alongside behavioral and attachment issues.

While open, they accepted boys and girls ages 5 to 14 years who had several behavioral health challenges and required an environment to address those issues. The treatment philosophy supported children who came from an environment where their parents used substances or after they had completed a structured treatment program for their own substance use disorder.

Relationship Building: the Foundation of the Program

The essence of their model was to help build a child's relationship with an individual so they could gain trust and independence simultaneously. Clients typically stayed for about 18 months. They worked closely with the family, believing that this involvement was a crucial part of the healing process.

The facility first opened in 1955 as a home for boys, but had since evolved to serving boys and girls using the attachment model. Before closing in 2021, the facility had built a new facility that doubled the capacity of their residential program from 16 to 32. When the building opened in 2005, it coincided with the facility's 50th anniversary.
