Although it’s primarily focused on mental health services, Vesta Community Mental Health, in Lanham, Maryland, also offers substance abuse counseling. They have seven locations total throughout Maryland, and they’ll work with you if you have Medicaid or Medicare. In fact, they don’t accept private insurance or Medicare Advantage.

Accredited Intensive Outpatient Program

This organization is CARF accredited so they take recovery seriously even though it’s not their main focus. The Lanham location is the only one that has an IOP, an intensive outpatient program. While they don’t have residential substance use disorder programs, this intensive program seems to have a strong client-centered focus and to get people back to being self-sufficient. And because they treat substance use disorders as a co-occurring issue, this could be a good place to get support if you’re also dealing with other serious mental health conditions.

If traveling is an issue, you can access Vesta’s individual and group therapy options for addiction treatment on their telehealth portal. I like that you can always visit the facility and have your sessions on site too.

I think visiting a temple could be a calming side trip while you’re navigating through your recovery. The Sri Siva Vishnu Temple, also in Lanham, is about a half hour drive from Washington D.C. Another cultural option is the National Gallery of Art, also in D.C., where you can see paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and other old masters.
