About Tidewater Psychotherapy Services – Cunningham Stephen MD
Tidewater Psychotherapy Services is a private behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment practice located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This location serves people of all ages with a multidisciplinary team of professional providers. Programs include intensive (IOP) and general outpatient (OP) treatment, as well as medication assisted treatment (MAT) for addressing opioid use disorder.
Treatment plans include individual and group counseling. Family oriented support is available, too. They have a specialized cognitive therapy program that helps you analyze and change your thought patterns and behaviors. Their philosophy is that abstaining from addictive substances is only one component of successful recovery, and that relapse isn't a sign of failure.
Our actions and behaviors are linked to our thoughts, and those thoughts are shaped by our environment. For many, the breakthrough moment in recovery comes with cultivating a deeper sense of self awareness. From there, they can better learn how to reclaim control of themselves and make changes for the better.
Tidewater's program is all about developing this sense of self awareness in a private and professional setting. Whether you choose to go on this journey alone or participate in peer groups, you'll explore the ins and outs of addictive behaviors under the care of a professional clinical team. If you lose your way, you'll be met with compassion and understanding. Tidewater recognizes that recovery is a long term process and that when mistakes are made, you need support and not punishment.
I appreciate that they offer multiple levels of outpatient care. The intensive outpatient is usually reserved for those who have completed a higher level of care or who are experiencing severe symptoms. It's sometimes used in place of inpatient treatment.
General outpatient is a better fit for those with mild symptoms or who are stepping down from the intensive program. Both of these options grant a certain amount of flexibility in scheduling.
It should be noted that reviews of this facility are very mixed. While some are enthusiastic about staff and the services they receive, others have voiced concerns over poor communication from staff and quality of care.
