The Salvation Army Northwest Indiana Adult Rehabilitation Center and Administrative Offices is a residential recovery program for adults struggling with substance use issues in Gary, Indiana. The program offers hope, healing and opportunity for a fulfilling and rewarding life free from drugs or alcohol. Residents receive spiritual, emotional and social assistance in a structured and supportive space that fosters recovery. Food and all basic necessities are provided to ensure comfort.

Accessing Recovery in Gary, IN

Gary is a city in Lake County which is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The facility is easy to access from East Chicago and Hammond via the I-80/94 corridor about 1 mile south of the highway exit. GPTC operates buses in the area that can potentially get you to and from the clinic if you have urgent needs to address offsite. Gary Metro Station is also about two miles to the east and offers access to regional bus and train services.

Work-Oriented Residential Recovery

The core attribute of this program is that it adopts a therapeutic work recovery model. You’re required to work up to 40 hours per week in Salvation Army Family Stores or other areas. They may adjust scheduling to meet your unique needs. Work therapy fosters strong work habits that restore your self-esteem and create a sense of self-worth and accomplishment that helps you reenter the community and workforce. I like that you’ll even gain valuable skills that you can leverage into gainful employment after the program.

However, the program offers much more besides work therapy. You’ll attend group and individual counseling to build coping skills, address underlying psychological issues fueling your substance use and prevent relapse. You’ll also attend spiritual counseling to strengthen your relationship with God. This can offer peace and help you find purpose in recovery.

The program incorporates support groups using the AA model to help you build a strong sober network, share experiences and stay accountable in recovery. They also offer education and life skill development to help you navigate daily challenges, make healthier choices and build a stable future. You can easily pick up skills like relationship-building, effective communication and problem solving. You may benefit from a nominal weekly gratuity depending on your progress in all aspects of the program.

The program lasts for a minimum of six months or 180 days. As you prepare to reenter the community, the staff will assist you with job applications and securing an accommodation. This is to enable you to sustain your recovery gains.
