The POI Institute, which has a business office in Timonium, Maryland, provides a unique approach to substance use detox through their treatment center in Cabos San Lucas in Mexico. They use a psychedelic called Ibogaine to temporarily reduce substance use cravings and to address mental health issues.

The clinic notes that Ibogaine doesn’t cure addiction. Instead, it creates a window of opportunity to pursue treatment and address mindsets and habits to establish long term sobriety. Medically Focused Detox Using Ibogaine

The POI Institute uses Ibogaine for medical detox from substance use as well as treatment for depression and other mental health conditions.

I noticed that Ibogaine initially creates mind altering effects, including hallucinations. According to the clinic, this lasts 2-4 hours, although some studies have seen the initial impact last up to 20 hours. Once Ibogaine metabolizes in the body, it creates Noribogaine that stays in and binds to opioid receptors. This may be part of Ibogaine’s anti addictive impact.

The POI Institute has a limited number of clients at a time. In general, the treatment process lasts between 5 and 10 days, but they also have extended treatment plans that are open ended for those who need more time for recovery.

Laws Regarding Ibogaine

While Ibogaine is currently illegal in the U.S., scientists in the United States and other countries are doing studies to understand its safety and effectiveness. There are also studies of non-hallucinogenic analogs. In Mexico, where the clinic is located, there are no laws around the use of Ibogaine.
