About The Extension
Located about 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta, The Extension Men's Campus in Marietta, Georgia, offers help to adult men experiencing issues with substance use and homelessness. For men over the age of 24, it’s a place to begin recovery in a safe environment.
There’s a history here that goes back to 1987 when the community pulled together and opened the Marietta-Cobb Winter Shelter. A few years later, in 1995, a counselor was hired, and by 2001, a new building was constructed to house men struggling with addiction. I’m so impressed that they’ve grown enough to have room to help 80 men today!
Staying Longer Makes a Difference
Most clients stay in the program for 9-12 months. Long term treatment gives you a chance to break old habits and build new ones. For most people, it takes that long to get sober and build some stability.
The consistent support you’ll find in a longer program seems to work well. Several clients have talked about their “life-changing experiences and successful recovery journeys.” Having the same people by your side for the long term makes recovery feel more solid.
Building New Skills for Independence
As you and the other guys learn how to live a sober life, you’ll also be learning some new skills. Living with a substance use disorder often means forgetting to take care of yourself and your responsibilities.
You’ll learn how to manage money and even cook your own meals. They have educational programs that help you prepare for a job. Another piece of the program is learning how to build healthy relationships. If you'd like to stretch your legs and clear your mind after a long day, Lewis Park isn’t too far away.
Helpers Who Really Care About You
Sometimes all you need is that one person who wants to see you succeed. I like what Dr. Mike Unger, the center’s medical director says, “I love watching people get better.” For men in Cobb County who need a place to live while going through addiction treatment, The Extension may be a good solution.
