About Stonington Institute

The tranquil, campus-like setting of the Stonington Institute located in North Stonington, Connecticut, provides the perfect calming environment for people hoping to recover from substance use issues. They have three primary services: an inpatient detox program, a partial hospitalization program, and a specialist program for military personnel. While the Stonington Institute accepts private pay and most major insurance, they don’t currently accept Medicare.

Stonington Instiutes’s inpatient detox helps stabilize clients from their chemical dependency on drugs and alcohol in a comfortable and medically supervised setting. As well as safely weaning off substances, clients in detox are helped to understand the disease of addiction better, are introduced to the 12 Step principles, and develop a long term recovery plan. Clients with a secondary mental health diagnosis are eligible for detox. Still, some medical conditions may not meet the Institute’s criteria, so it’s worth calling to complete a pre-admission screening.

When clients are stabilized in their chemical dependency, they can move into one of Stonington’s outpatient programs. They offer a partial hospitalization program, an intensive outpatient program, and a sober living facility in Groton. These outpatient programs allow clients to return to their homes after programming hours, while still receiving structured care.

Not every journey to recovery looks the same, so Stonington ensures each client has an individualized outpatient treatment plan that focuses on their unique needs. Plans often include individual, group, and family counseling, cognitive behavioral and processing therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Complementary therapies to support the recovery journey and overall well-being include art and music therapy, martial arts, yoga, spirituality, and vocational education.

A real stand out of the Stonington Institute is the Starlight Military Program. This is a residential rehabilitation program designed to meet the diverse needs of active duty personnel in all military branches. Specializing in dual diagnosis treatment, the program helps clients develop solid strategies for healthy behaviors to support permanent lifestyle changes and maintain long term recovery.
