About St. Mary’s Home for Children

St. Mary’s Home for Children closed in January 2025 after an admirable 145 years of service in the North Providence, Rhode Island community. They primarily served children who had been affected by sexual abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, and other traumas.

Their services didn’t treat addiction directly, but their extensive mental health program addressed several overlapping concerns for children and teens with co-occurring disorders.

Guidance and Support for Families Affected by Sexual Abuse

I saw that St. Mary’s understood the deep way sexual abuse affected families and worked with every family member to find healing.

For youths who were exploring sexually following a traumatic event, they helped them find healthier and safer ways to express themselves and regulate their emotions.

Equine-Assisted Therapy for PTSD and Depression

One unique service that St. Mary’s offered was equine-assisted psychotherapy – a form of individual therapy that involved interacting with trained therapy horses. I’m impressed how youths would feed, brush, watch, and lead horses while forming a strong bond with the gentle animals.

Over time, working with the horses gave youths a chance to discover more about themselves and work through traumas and other mental health conditions.
