About Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center

Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center (SHCMHC) was established in 1968 as one of 13 community mental health centers in West Virginia. This statewide initiative nurtures human potential through mental health support and substance use treatment, education, and advocacy. They offer outpatient mental health services for all ages, along with substance use recovery for adults and adolescents. Their continuum of substance use care ranges from detox and residential care to outpatient therapy and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

It’s along Coal Heritage Road northwest of Kimball War Memorial and less than two miles from Martha H. Moore Riverfront Park. This clinic offers outpatient substance use recovery including court-ordered assessment and education for DUI offenders.

What’s great about this facility is their commitment to West Virginia Medicaid. A sliding fee scale lets you pay based on income and family size. They even offer transportation to and from appointments for patients covered by West Virginia Medicaid. Telehealth is available for convenience.

Integrated System of Addiction Recovery

The Welch clinic primarily offers substance use and psychiatric assessments, personalized care planning and outpatient therapy. Those with substance use and co-occurring mental health issues like depression are provided psychiatric care and monitoring.

The beauty of it all is that SHCMHC is a fully integrated system, so you can be easily connected to other clinics in the network. You may be referred for sub-acute detox and residential treatment for severe substance use symptoms. There’s also MAT to manage opioid withdrawal with Suboxone or Vivitrol if needed.

The Welch Clinic also offers case management as part of their wraparound services. Case managers will help you address personal needs like finding stable accommodation and employment. Many past clients appreciated the care and support from therapists at this clinic, though some feedback suggests there’s room for improvement.
