About South Carolina STRONG

South Carolina STRONG boasts a self-governing residential community. They welcome men and women ready to rebuild their lives and rediscover their purpose. The facility is located at the old Navy base in North Charleston northwest of scenic Riverfront Park. They’re one of six residential programs operated by the Delaney Street Foundation, a reputable self-help agency with locations across six states.

Becoming Strong

They support marginalized individuals caught in cycles of generational poverty. The average resident is often a second-generation gang member, substance user or justice-involved individual. Many have experienced repeated institutionalization and homelessness.

South Carolina STRONG offers a communal space where individuals can build self-reliance, gain practical job skills, and pursue education. I really love that the program is totally free.

You must also commit to a minimum two-year stay and be willing to fully engage in the work-centered structure. Referrals are accepted from every aspect of the criminal justice system from diversion and alternative sentencing to probation and parole.

Vocational and Educational-Oriented Recovery

The facility functions as a close-knit community or extended family where residents hold each other accountable and share responsibilities. Daily interactions with peers foster trust-building and effective communication that support long-term success.

I love how residents teach each other. Older residents mentor newcomers and everyone contributes. Each resident achieves at least a basic high school equivalency diploma before graduating. Many even go to college offered in partnership with accredited universities.

You’re also empowered to develop at least three marketable skills, which may include manual labor, clerical or computer training and interpersonal skills. You can learn auto repair, construction work, warehousing, office administration and trucking. Every few months, you’ll be rotated into a new position to gain hands-on experience in a different trade.
