Smith Transitional and Rehabilitation Services

Smith Transitional and Rehabilitation Services (STARS) in Jonesboro, Georgia was established in 2004 to empower Georgia families with the tools and resources needed to build a strong and more resilient community. They’ve since evolved as a force in the community, helping families navigate resources from food and child care to parenting support, rent relief and utility assistance.

STARS is an intensive family intervention service provider focused on helping at-risk children and adolescents between six and 17 years navigate crises resulting from exposure to drugs, violence and sexual trauma. Growing up in an environment where these unhealthy behaviors are normalized often shapes their worldview.

Most are diagnosed with one or more behavioral health issues from multiple out-of-home placements, chronic crime and frequent school suspensions to sexual offending behaviors, anger management issues and substance use disorders. These conditions make intervention especially urgent and delicate, requiring a trauma-informed and compassionate approach to promote healing and long-term change.

Crisis Support and Intervention

I appreciate that STARS offers 24-hour crisis care to youth in distress, whether they’re overwhelmed by emotional trauma, caught in unsafe living situations or struggling with drug overdoses. Emphasis is on providing immediate relief, restoring stable functioning and connecting clients to the appropriate supportive community services that foster long-term healing.

Family-Centered Support Services

STARS is committed to delivering high-quality therapeutic and supportive services that nurture healthy social skills, encourage self-esteem building and promote general wellness of the mind, body and spirit. I like that their substance use counseling helps youth understand the impact of addiction, develop healthier coping strategies and rebuild trust in themselves and others.

Therapeutic support is delivered in the home and includes the entire family to foster healing, strengthen relationships, and support lasting wellness. They also provide life skills development, parenting support and educational assistance such as after-school programs, childcare and tutoring. They even offer utility and financial assistance to help families meet their basic needs so they can focus on healing and growth.
