About Sandpiper Room

The Sandpiper Group in Cocoa Beach, Florida, hosts many community support meetings for alcoholics and their loved ones. Support group meetings are closed, meaning only alcoholics can attend, or are open to the public for anyone.

AA Discussion Groups

Discussion groups are open or closed, based on the schedule. Some discussions are gender specific. In discussion groups, you and your peers will discuss events or topics related to substance use, recovery, or sobriety. Topic discussions are initiated by the group.

Groups Based on AA Literature

Daily reflections meetings are typically open and are based on readings from the book of reflections by AA members for AA members. The readings are a source of daily meditation.

The group includes the day’s reflection from the book and a reflection written by a member of the group. Reflections are written by members to support and encourage others in the group.

Steps meetings use the “Big Book” AA literature for reading and discussions. Open literature meetings involve reading and discussing a passage from some AA literature.

Another open group is “As Bill Sees It.” These readings are collections of writings by AA’s cofounder Bill Wilson and are based on acceptance, gratitude, and spirituality.

Big book meetings choose a topic from the Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. The group discusses the topic and shares experiences.

Living sober meetings use the Living Sober pamphlet to initiate discussions about how to maintain sobriety. Group members share successes and failures while initiating support and encouragement.

Open Speaker and Beginner’s Groups

Open speaker meetings are open meetings where members of the group share stories of their path to recovery. If you have never been to an AA support group, you will want to start with the open beginners group.

People are naturally apprehensive about new environments and blending with strangers, but a beginner group will allow you to adapt to the group process and form relationships with others in recovery. If you need substance use treatment, the leader of your group can refer you to a local facility that provides treatment.
