About Salvation Army Harbor Light Center

The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center was located in Washington, DC. This facility has since closed. When they were in operation, they provided compassionate care to men and women who were struggling with substance use disorder. They were nationally recognized for their philanthropic efforts. This facility helped you get on the path to recovery while empowering you to build critical skills for success. They had an intensive adult rehabilitation program here. They also had an intensive outpatient program and connected people to employment services.

At the heart of their adult rehabilitation program was their work therapy curriculum. This work therapy program required you to be involved in one of the affiliate organizations of the Salvation Army. You may have also been involved in other programs where you would have been expected to work as part of a team, giving back to your community. This work therapy program is successful because you gain a sense of accomplishment and pride as you work. Participants here gained real world practical skills that they could apply to their lives once they left the treatment program.

Supplementing the work therapy program was counseling support provided by counselors and staff. You learned how to reframe your thinking so that you could better manage difficult emotions when they arose. Along with this, you learned how to identify triggers that may contribute to your substance use. This allowed you to make choices that lead to healthier habits.

They also offered support through fellowship and faith based counseling. This allowed you to connect to a higher power as you experienced difficulties in your recovery. Other support included 12 step style programs like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. With this, you could continue building the momentum you developed during your treatment program.
