About PSA Art Awakenings

PSA Art Awakenings is a mental health support program in downtown Phoenix that promotes empowerment and recovery through creative expression for adults and youth facing behavioral health challenges. The program offers outpatient services including individual psychotherapy and therapeutic art groups, specializing in substance use disorders, dual diagnosis, serious mental illness, and trauma.

Founded in 1988 by artists and mental health professionals, Art Awakenings operates from the belief that creative expression unlocks healing and builds lasting skills for recovery.

Art Therapy for Mental Health and Addiction Recovery

Art Awakenings uses expressive art therapy as its core treatment approach for individuals with substance abuse, alcoholism, gambling addiction, and co-occurring mental health disorders. Clients work in fully equipped art studios exploring visual arts, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, poetry, writing, music, movement, and drama in a safe, supportive environment.

Sessions integrate cognitive-behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing alongside hands-on creative work that I found helps individuals express emotions, reduce stress, and manage psychiatric symptoms.

Participants report that creating art in this peer-guided community reduces symptom intensity while building confidence and artistic skills.

Peer-Guided Recovery and Skill Development

A unique feature I've found of Art Awakenings is its progression model where individuals can become program assistants and instructors to support newer members.

This peer-guided approach builds the community and provides pre-vocational training alongside therapeutic arts programming, helping clients develop both recovery skills and real-world work experience.

CARF Accredited: Art Awakenings

Art Awakenings serves clients at its downtown Phoenix studio, with additional locations throughout Arizona. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and is part of Resilient Health.
