About Northwestern Community Service Board Winchester Children’s Center

Northwestern Community Services offers substance use and co-occurring disorder treatment programs. They have several clinics, including the location on Amherst Street in Winchester, Virginia. They start with a comprehensive assessment of your mental health and substance use history to determine which treatment program will work best for you.

The three commercial insurance plans they accept as an in network provider include United Healthcare, Optima, and Anthem BC/BS of Virginia. They take Veterans Administration Community Care Network, Medicare, and all Virginia Medicaid plans and MCOs. You may still be able to use your insurance if your plan isn’t on the list.

Their substance use treatment programs include an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that meets three times a week for at least three hours. They have a morning program for women and an afternoon program for women and men. The program uses a curriculum from the American Society of Addiction Medicine and includes group and individual therapy.

They also offer office based addiction treatment with medication assisted treatment (MAT), substance use case management and recovery skills groups. Case management services coordinate your onsite services. They can also refer you to childcare, primary healthcare, education and vocational counseling and other services.

The facility offers the REACH program which serves individuals with developmental disabilities, no matter their age. The program targets those who are a danger to themselves or others as well as those at risk for hospitalization, homelessness or incarceration. Participants are eligible for these services if they have a documented developmental or intellectual disability and a significant behavioral challenge or co-occurring mental illness.

Some of the services available include school and community programs that promote mental wellness and aim to prevent suicide and substance misuse. These are grant funded initiatives such as Mental Health First Aid, Lock and Talk Virginia, and Strengthening Families.

Mental Health First Aid trains participants to identify and help individuals who are potentially developing a mental health problem. Lock and Talk promotes responsible and safe care of medications, guns and anything that could be lethal. Strengthening Families is for families with children between the ages of 10 and 14 and teaches participants valuable skills to help families.
