About Northwest Hospital – Behavioral Health

UW Medical Center Northwest Behavioral Health is a psychiatric hospital and substance use treatment program in Seattle, Washington offering inpatient and outpatient mental health services for adults, including specialized care for co-occurring mental health and addiction disorders.

Located on a 44 acre campus in North Seattle, the program provides hospital inpatient treatment, intensive outpatient services and long term civil commitment care.

As part of the UW Medicine system and affiliated with the University of Washington Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, I think it's interesting that the facility combines evidence based psychiatric care with a teaching mission focused on training the next generation of mental health professionals.

Integrated Treatment Programs

Treatment begins with a psychiatric assessment to determine the appropriate level of care, which may include hospital inpatient treatment for acute psychiatric crises, long term stays of 90 to 180 days for civil commitment clients or intensive outpatient programming.

The newly opened Center for Behavioral Health and Learning is a six story, 150 bed facility featuring a 25 bed geropsychiatry unit, a 75 bed long term unit and a 50 bed medical and behavioral health unit.

Clients receive integrated care for substance abuse addictions and co-occurring mental health disorders through cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy and group therapy, individual psychotherapy and medication management. The intensive outpatient program meets three days per week for three hours daily over approximately 90 days, focusing on coping skills and symptom management, relapse prevention and community reintegration.
