If cost is the first thing standing between you and care, a long-running New Jersey nonprofit is a reminder that low-cost addiction treatment and free harm reduction services do exist. The Starting Point in Haddon Township marks 49 years of helping people work through addiction and mental health challenges, with services gathered under one roof.
To be clear, the Garden State has many treatment options for folks of all backgrounds, including nonprofits and charities. What makes The Starting Point unique is its longevity, starting with its founder and owner. Founder Vincent DiPasquale is now 86 years old but still works four days every week. “Our job here is to plant seeds and then see how they grow,” DiPasquale informed reporters.
From a South Philly Halfway House to a Wellness Hub
DiPasquale started the program in 1977 as a halfway house in South Philadelphia before it moved to New Jersey and grew into an outpatient program. What began with treatment for alcohol and drug use has expanded to cover mental health, grief and loss and trauma. Managing Director Angela Baxter said Starting Point now works with nearly 45 practitioners.
“Whenever you have alcohol addiction, you have mental health also, so it’s a combination,” DiPasquale noted.
Access Affordable Care
Community nonprofits like this one often serve people who are uninsured, underinsured, or simply priced out of private-pay programs. Many offer individual and group therapy, workshops and peer support, and some use sliding-scale fees based on income. The Starting Point also hosts a free weekly lecture series on Zoom, open to anyone, which is a no-cost way to start engaging with recovery support.
You don’t have to pay private-pay prices to get help. Practical next steps include asking any program whether it accepts Medicaid or Medicare or if it offers a sliding scale or scholarship spots. Fee services in New Jersey can also include support groups and naloxone distribution sites in many communities.
Nonprofit and faith-based organizations, state substance-use helplines and 211 can all point you toward low-cost options nearby.
