About Methodist Children’s Homes of Mississippi
Methodist Children's Homes of Mississippi is a faith-based organization that started way back in 1896. That alone surprised me immensely, as I realized they've been helping people for a long time and have served over 11,000 children in their time as an organization. They’re located in Jackson, Mississippi, and have evolved from their original orphanage in Water Valley to multiple different homes all over the state with their primary campus in Jackson. Their belief is that through Jesus Christ they can bring hope and healing to hurting children in the state of Mississippi.
What They Offer for Young People
They offer therapeutic residential care for youth between the ages of 13 and 21 and who’ve been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect by their caretakers. This facility is in a family-style home, and you'd be receiving several helpful services such as weekly individual therapy and life skills training, which includes learning essential skills like cooking, cleaning, financial literacy, job application processes, obtaining housing, and getting your driver's license.
You'd also be getting educational support by receiving weekly tutoring to enhance your academic performance. As you might have guessed, spiritual guidance is a main feature here, and you'd have plenty of opportunities for spiritual growth and support from the campus pastor. I also like that they offer recreational activities on and off campus to keep you entertained and promote your social development skills.
Crisis Care in Mississippi
They have crisis services in case you need immediate support and offer something called the Wells-Tonkel Independent Living Apartment. This residency is for people who are 18 and older and are working or attending school full-time. They offer therapeutic foster care as well and a program called Magnolia Youth Services.
