About Neil Kennedy Recovery Center – Austintown
The Neil Kennedy Recovery Center in Austintown, Ohio was a substance use treatment facility with a long history in the community. I was amazed to find out it was the first private and freestanding alcohol treatment facility in the entire county when it opened in 1946.
Neil Kennedy, a co-founder of the center, had been active in AA, overcoming his own alcohol use disorder. His sponsor in AA was one of the founders of the program, Dr. Bob.
Overcoming Stigma with Evidence Based Treatment
When the center was founded, they used cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for treatment. That’s now the gold standard in evidence based care but in 1946 it was viewed with more skepticism.
There was also a lot of stigma around substance use because it was seen as a willpower issue or moral failing instead of the chronic disease we now understand it to be. In 1956 alcoholism was finally declared a diagnosable illness by the American Medical Association, but there’s still stigma around addiction being fought to this day.
At the end of the 70s the Neil Kennedy Center began to treat drug addiction as well as alcohol misuse, and they eventually offered inpatient detox along with multiple levels of outpatient care. In 1987 they established a women’s specific program and in 1999 Gateway Rehab Network affiliated with the Center, helping it to grow and serve the community more effectively.
Community Outreach and Prevention om Austintown
Along with treating substance use, the Neil Kennedy Center worked to prevent it by educating the public. They partnered with other leaders in the area to host community summits on the impact of substance use and to spread education about opioid misuse.
A big part of the Center’s work was supporting those in recovery. I wasn’t surprised to see AA and other 12 Step programs as a core component of both treatment and aftercare support considering the founder’s experience with the program. Their Fellowship Hall continues to host a variety of meetings every week even after the clinic closed.
The Kennedy Recovery Center closed suddenly at the end of 2022 after Gateway Rehab ended the affiliation agreement, perhaps to focus their business on Pennsylvania. Their clients were transferred to Meridian Healthcare to continue receiving the treatment and support they need.
