About National Youth Advocate Program

The National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) serves youth and their families across 16 states, including Ohio. In Ohio, they have 18 clinics that offer a range of services. The Cleveland Clinic provides outpatient treatment for substance use and mental health disorders, care management services, and functional family therapy (FFT).

NYAP accepts Medicaid as well as other insurance plans. Some programs may be specifically for Medicaid beneficiaries.

Care Management Service for Families At Risk

Along with traditional individual and group outpatient therapy for addiction and mental health, I like that NYAP offers more focused, intensive programs. These programs are designed to meet a specific need and increase the client or family’s ability to seek their own care afterward.

Care Management services are part of Ohio’s child welfare system. The goal is to help a family have a safe and stable place for children to live so that out of home placement is minimized.

The program provides community based support to address child neglect and abuse, parental substance use, parental mental health and other issues. Services for Care Management include assessments, substance use and mental health treatment, parenting support and links to relevant community resources.

Functional Family Therapy to Strengthen the Family Unit

FFT delivers services to youth ages 11 to 18 with a behavioral health disorder who are also either at risk of removal from home or are transitioning back into their home after a placement. I noticed the focus of the program is on improving the family unit by teaching family members how to communicate effectively, manage conflict, set clear rules and more. This provides a stable environment and ensures family dynamics are not contributing to the youth’s behavioral health concerns.
