About North American Family Institute
The North American Family Institute (NAFI) has a wide range of services in Warwick Rhode Island for youth under 18, including a residential program for up to eight adolescent boys and a variety of outpatient services. This address is the Oakland Beach home that addresses major psychiatric conditions and substance use. They may have involvement in the juvenile justice system.
NAFI has been serving Rhode Island for over 30 years, and the home is right off Warwick Cove. They accept the Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island and Medicaid for payment.
Community and Family Involvement in Warwick
The Oakland Beach program accepts referrals from the RI Family Court and RI DCYF. I really like that they work to keep the boys involved in the community as much as possible. The residents attend public school and are in extracurricular activities such as sports, volunteering, the Boys and Girls Club, and NAFI events.
Family involvement is key to the program and uses the Multidimensional Family Therapy model (MDFT). This approach isn’t about finding fault for the issues but instead focuses on the opportunities available to make positive changes. They help empower parents to take action and support their children in overcoming problem behavior. The program also educates the boys about alternatives to substance use and illegal activity to help them find a more positive and productive way to live.
If a young person in the program can’t start public school right away there’s a full time special education teacher available to teach them so they don’t fall behind their peers. The boys learn life skills and receive case management services to ensure all their needs are met.
Outpatient Services After Residential Treatment
NAFI also has enhanced outpatient services in Warwick to serve as a step down for boys who have finished the residential program and still need support and treatment.
One of my favorite programs is Parenting With Love and Limits. Power struggles between parents and teens seeking independence can be common and result in rebellious behavior. This program helps parents and teens learn how to balance parental authority with teen empowerment and individuality to improve behavior and lower family stress.
They also have multisystemic therapy that helps teens address substance use as well as anger management, poor grades, skipping school and strained relationships. This in-home service seeks to promote change in the teens day to day environment, which I think makes a lot of sense as an approach.
