About Larue Carter Memorial Hospital

Larue D. Carter Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, served for decades as a leading state psychiatric hospital and addiction treatment provider for complex dual diagnosis cases.
It provided comprehensive inpatient psychiatric care and a full spectrum of therapeutic services until its closure.

The facility's legacy was its mission to serve as a safety-net for individuals with severe, co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Proudly Served Diverse Groups

I like that the hospital served all age groups and provided care for veterans, LGBTQ+ clients and those with traumatic brain injury or involved with the criminal justice system. I noticed that treatment included cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and trauma-informed therapy.

These therapies could help individuals learn to adjust negative thoughts and behaviors that were hindering their recovery. They also learned how to cope with stress without using substances.

A Multidisciplinary Approach

Additional treatment options included psychiatric medication management, psychosocial rehabilitation and vocational rehab. The hospital operated from a large, secured campus on Cold Spring Road in Indianapolis, near Marian University.

The hospital accepted Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, self-pay and state-funded health insurance plans.
