About Klallam Counseling Services

Klallam Counseling Services (KCS) is situated at West US Route 101 in Port Angeles, Washington, about three miles north of Madison Falls and four miles west of the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center. They’re a Washington State–licensed outpatient substance use recovery facility operated by the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. This is a federally recognized Native American tribe located on the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula in Clallam County.

KCS is part of the broader Lower Elwha Health Department, which includes more than five standalone clinics offering dedicated services such as primary medical care, mental health treatment and dental care. I appreciate that KCS is dedicated to promoting wellness within the tribal, American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) and surrounding communities through evidence-based and whole-person recovery that supports long-term healing.

You can access both outpatient and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels of care here, depending on your unique needs. They’re also licensed to provide court-ordered assessments for DUI offenders.

Evidence-Based and Whole-Person Addiction Recovery

KCS offers assessment, treatment planning and outpatient therapy with morning and evening sessions to accommodate your work, school and other daily routines. IOP offers a more focused recovery guidance for those seeking structured therapeutic support.

This program is rooted in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), which fosters positive emotional regulation, distress tolerance and interpersonal skills development. Therapists integrate this technique in group and individual sessions to support long-term recovery and emotional well-being.

Alternative, Holistic Therapeutic Approaches

I like that in addition to lectures and group discussions, you’ll also engage in hands-on activities, art therapy projects and group outings to enhance your recovery experience. You’ll also participate in meditation, talking circles and other Native American cultural practices to deepen your connection to healing and foster personal growth.

Another great holistic component of this program is acupuncture. This offers various benefits to your recovery and overall wellbeing, from easing painful withdrawal symptoms and reducing stress to promoting relaxation and improving sleep.
