About Josephine County Community Corrections

Josephine County Community Corrections is a department of Josephine County Services in Grants Pass, Oregon. They’re dedicated to reducing recidivism by providing services within the community and the Corrections Department, addressing treatment and supervision, mainly for women.

Grants Pass is in southern Oregon with a population of roughly 39,000. It's well known for its location on the Rogue River, offering rafting, fishing and boating, and these healthy recreational activities can supplement recovery for those re-entering the community.

Reducing Relapse and Recidivism

Josephine County Community Corrections Department provides information to citizens, partners, and staff on a range of matters that help promote community safety and maintain public accessibility. I noticed that the correctional counseling program is offered to individuals in the facility, targeting emotional regulation and improving interpersonal communication patterns.

While they do not offer a structured substance use disorder treatment program, they offer opportunities that help reduce relapse and, therefore, recidivism. They work with 80 justice involved individuals via interventions to address violence, sexual and sexually related offenses. I’m impressed with their gender specific programming emphasizing trauma-informed care.

The program emphasizes post release continuum of care to ensure that clients receive the necessary support after discharge.

Custody Alternative for Those with less than 12 Months

Josephine County also offers a Custody Alternative Program for individuals sentenced to 12 months or less. Placement is determined by staff assessment, so appropriate placement in jail or an alternative custodial program like community service or home detention can be determined. The staff work closely with the county jail and community referrals to ensure correct placement and consistent forward progress of the clients.

Alternatives include electronic monitoring for individuals who are at lower risk to public safety and work crew environments where clients participate for 8 hours a day, 6 days each week, performing labor intensive projects that benefit the city, county and state parks and properties.
