About Howard Center Act One And Bridge Program
Howard Center Act One And Bridge Program was an inpatient program in Burlington, Vermont. They’re closed now, but they offered help to people of all ages who wished to give up drugs or alcohol. Once in this program, participants could stay in a clean, encouraging environment as they worked toward sobriety. After undergoing a preliminary assessment, participants had the option to remain in the program, receive medical attention at the hospital and be released to a family member or placed under protective custody.
While acknowledging that many of their clients were going through a life crisis, they approached intervention and treatment with a goal directed methodology. They offered support and stability, assisted with referrals and gave advice on the proper level of follow up care. They also supported the individual and family through the crisis.
Their bridge program offered individuals who were struggling with problematic alcohol or other drug use short term stabilization, detoxification, and withdrawal management in a non medical setting. The program was staffed 24 hours a day. Depending on the particular needs of each person they referred them to their other services and worked in conjunction with the University of Vermont Medical Center Emergency Department to provide related services.
They provided clinical assessments, clinical supervision and service coordination for injectable drug users. They offered referrals for those in need of more intensive care. Every client was given a continuing care plan and free everyday community support groups provided after discharge assistance. Referrals came from the court system, primary care physicians and friends or family of the client. The also accepted clergy, concerned members of the community and self referrals.
