About Housatonic Valley Coalition

Hausatonic Valley Coalition, which is now Western Connecticut Coalition, is located in Watertown, Connecticut. This is a group comprised of experienced treatment providers and recovery support.

The group meets monthly and focuses on substance use trends related to cannabis, vaping and benzodiazepines. Meetings include outside speakers and the group’s purpose is to develop yearly legislative agendas.

To keep connected with up-to-date statewide programs and information, group members also belong to sub-committees of the Connecticut Alcohol and Drug Policy Council. The group members help develop local resources for preventing and addressing addiction, stigma, treatment, opioid misuse and recovery needs of the residents.

Problem Gambling Awareness

I noticed that the group works to raise awareness about problem gambling and connect those with disordered gambling to the appropriate treatment. Meetings are held monthly and they welcome volunteers to the group.

The Problem Gambling Awareness Team hosts webinars and gambling awareness trainings. A Youth Peer Leadership team offers opportunities for youth groups in the region to create public service announcements with a focus on problem gambling as well as attend trainings.

Regional Substance Workgroups

There are additional workgroups, committees and teams dealing with different social ills. These include a suicide advisory board, nicotine & cannabis prevention workgroup, regional opioid workgroup and a drug-free schools group.

I think it’s great that the Underage Nicotine & Cannabis Prevention Workgroup is devoted to disseminating information about the impact of access to e-cigarettes and vaping. They bring materials to campus and community events, post on their webpage and social media, and engage with community partners.

Grassroots Coalitions

Local Prevention Councils (LPCs) make up the Prevention Committee. The committee assists the Western Connecticut Coalition in assessing prevention needs in the service area.

They evaluate, develop and implement prevention programs. The programs align with the region’s priorities as set by the Regional Priority Planning Report.
