About Heart of America Pro Network

Heart of America Professional Network (HAPN) supports licensed healthcare professionals in Kansas who have mental health, substance use or physical health issues that could pose a risk to clients or public safety. Their professional office is located on Metcalf Avenue in Mission around the Shawnee Mission/Overland Park area and south of the Indian Creek Greenway.

Think of them as a specialized peer assistance program for licensed healthcare professionals distinct from general behavioral health or addiction recovery services. They provide confidential and structured support that includes advocacy, referrals and ongoing monitoring. Referrals may come from employers, peers or anyone concerned about a healthcare professional’s well-being.

Self-referral is also accepted which offers more confidentiality as you’ll remain anonymous to your professional board. We appreciate that participation doesn’t prevent you from continuing to practice. In some cases, the professional licensing board may even require HAPN involvement as a condition for maintaining your license. We also value the program’s cost-efficiency, with a one-time fee due at the time of referral.

Assessment and Extended Evaluation

You’ll undergo a thorough assessment that covers physical and mental health and psychiatric evaluations as well as screenings for substance use, gambling and anger management issues. You may qualify for an extended evaluation period lasting six to eighteen months.

Professional Monitoring Support

If impairment is identified, you’ll be encouraged to take part in a structured 3-5 monitoring program. They’ll monitor your treatment progress, sobriety from drugs or alcohol and active participation in 12-step meetings. If you’re receiving medication-assisted treatment, HAPN will coordinate with your prescribing physician to ensure appropriate medication management.

They conduct random urine, hair or blood drug tests at least once a month. They communicate with your employer quarterly and provide regular reports to all contracted licensing boards. Once your contracted time frame is complete, you’ll need to submit a formal request for release. After approval, you’ll no longer be required to meet the program’s requirements.
