About Georgia Southern University – The Center for Addiction Recovery
Georgia Southern University - The Center for Addiction Recovery is located in the university’s Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Health in Statesboro, Georgia. This is a specialized program for college students who are in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. This program is the nation’s longest running collegiate recovery program.
In order to be admitted into the program you will have to meet a minimum of requirements. You will need to be admitted to either Georgia Southern or East Georgia. You must also be in recovery from drugs and alcohol. Due to budgetary restraints, you will need to have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder. You will be expected to maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
I like that you will have access to a wide range of services. Weekly, you will attend seminars that help foster social networks, build community and develop life skills. These seminars are all in a small group setting.
What stood out to me is that you will be provided access to early registration. By having access to early registration, you will be able to manage your classes to accommodate your small group recovery sessions. On campus, you will have a dedicated space that includes a study room with computer access and a drop in room.
The program has been associated with reduced relapse rates and improvement with grades. It is encouraging to know that students who have graduated the program have gone on to become medical doctors, nurses, professors, business owners, accountants and news anchors.
