About First Step of Sarasota Manatee Outpatient

First Step Addiction Recovery Programs was a nonprofit mental health and addiction treatment organization with residential and outpatient treatment facilities in Florida. They also offered medication-assisted treatment (MAT). One outpatient treatment clinic was in Sarasota. The program accepted insurance from most providers and offered treatment on a sliding scale.

Sarasota Outpatient Addiction and Mental Health Treatment Program

Sarasota became known as Circus City after John Ringling, of the famed Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus, moved the circus’s winter quarters to Sarasota in the 1920s. Other circuses followed suit, and the city became synonymous with circus culture.

Today, there are many circus related attractions. I noticed the treatment center was located only a few miles from the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

One interesting thing about this program was that it offered outpatient addiction counseling that met the needs of adults 18 and over who didn’t need a residential treatment program or who couldn’t commit to one. The program used family, group, and individual therapy as well as substance use education.

They also offered an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that was 16 weeks. The IOP was based on the 12-step philosophy. They used small groups to allow for a more individualized approach. Clients were encouraged to explore the issues that contributed to their addiction.

DUI and Department of Corrections Addiction Treatment

I thought it was nice to see how many avenues of treatment were available for people through this clinic. They coordinated treatment with the Department of Corrections and a client’s probation officer to provide substance use education and treatment. They offered group, family, and individual therapy.

Additionally, they had a program that worked with the legal system to offer alternatives to jail for clients facing DUI arrests or charges associated with drugs. Clients needed a court referral to be admitted to the program. The program addressed addiction with the goal of reducing criminal behavior.

The treatment team also worked with families at risk of losing their children due to substance use issues. They provided intervention, support, education and treatment.
