About Family Center MATER at Jefferson Health
Family Center MATER at Jefferson Health is a substance use recovery program for women. MATER, which stands for Maternal Addiction Treatment, Education and Research serves pregnant or parenting women and focuses on a mindfulness based approach to recovery. This program is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Addiction Recovery for Women in Philadelphia
MATER is one of the largest and longest-standing women’s rehab programs in the country. This program helps women channel their love for their children into the willpower and skills needed to commit to lifelong recovery.
I like that their model of care includes a trauma-responsive, mindfulness focused framework to support women and their children. Women and their families are part of all the decision-making throughout their recovery.
Sadly, many women who have a substance abuse disorder also have a history of trauma including violence and homelessness. MATER’s mindfulness focus helps reduce stress, anxiety and promote self-compassion. I like that it’s also an effective tool to support the mothers’ parenting skills.
Outpatient & Residential Programs for Penslyvanians
MATER has different levels of care to suit the needs of all their clients. The first step is meeting with a MATER rep at either their Family Center or their residential campus called My Sister’s Place.
The Family Center offers intensive and general outpatient care including long-term support. I appreciate that women and their children also get access to medical, social services and psychological care. Impressively, this center serves hundreds of women every month.
My Sister’s Place is their residential program. Up to 22 women at a time can live in the facility with up to three children each. In addition to substance use treatment, women will learn personal and home care skills, cooking and financial management. I like that they include these important skills to help women once they leave the program.
