About Connecticut Renaissance Waterbury East Work Release
Connecticut Renaissance serves adults and youth who have behavioral health needs and are involved in the criminal justice system. The Waterbury East Work Release program, in Waterbury, Connecticut, is a residential program that helps adult men who need reentry support as their sentence comes to an end.
Services include help with addiction, mental health disorders and job training. The program is generally 90 to 120 days long and only accepts referrals from the Connecticut Department of Corrections.
Reentry Support for Men in Waterbury
At the beginning of the program, men have an orientation phase where they get used to the facility, residents and program. I think it’s excellent that the men work with staff collaboratively to create a reentry plan with specific goals and timeframes to achieve them.
Case managers meet with residents individually to help them access care for substance use and/or mental health treatment, as well as any medical needs. This includes individual and group therapy as well as connections to legal help and 12 step programs.
The program also supplies work skills assessments and support in getting productive employment, and the men are educated about possible barriers to reentry and how they can address them.
Life Skills Support For Successful Independence
I like that once a resident has a job, the reentry program helps them with specific financial skills, including financial literacy and budgeting. The men are also connected to housing and aftercare resources to ensure a smooth transition after release.
They also look at the overall list of goals in the reentry plan to determine when a resident is ready to graduate the program. If they have been successful participants, have housing and employment, and have resolved their legal issues, they are considered ready to graduate.
