About Ohio Reformatory for Women – Tapestry Therapeutic Community

Ohio Reformatory for Women in Marysville, Ohio, offers the Tapestry Therapeutic Community. This includes a 100 bed mental health treatment center and an outpatient treatment mall for incarcerated women. Nearly half of the 2,000 women incarcerated here have a diagnosed mental health disorder, and the program is designed to help these women live a life free of incarceration upon release.

Inpatient Mental Health Wing

The inpatient mental health area was designed and built based on Well Built standards of facility design for incarcerated women and staff at the reformatory. The area offers calming outdoor spaces, a garden, a teaching kitchen, enhanced technology, and a treatment space with plenty of natural light and acoustics.

The inpatient center offers four levels of treatment from intensive treatment for the most vulnerable women to a stepdown unit similar to residential. The inpatient wing is a 53,000 square foot building capable of treating up to 148 women.

What stands out to me is that the wing was built based on wellness’s 10 concepts: air, water, nourishment, light, movement, thermal comfort, sound, material, mind, and community. Healthy exposure for the women includes natural light and outdoor views, noise and sounds of nature filtering into the wing, access to outdoors, using healthy building materials, and healthy air.

Outpatient Treatment Mall

Connected to the wing is an outpatient treatment mall. I think it’s fantastic that hundreds of incarcerated women can be treated per day. The women participate in personalized individual sessions and group therapy. Rooms in the mall include a library, group meeting rooms, and individual interview rooms.

Although substance use is not specifically mentioned, women suffering from substance use disorder would be able to receive counseling and therapy with mental health professionals. Most individuals who are addicted have underlying mental health issues which can certainly be treated.
